From Hadassah to Intermarriage: Another stimulating weekend @ CBS in Wilmington

Dear Haverim:

*Tomorrow night, February 15, 6:30 p.m. (Hadassah Happy Hour 5:30 p.m.-note earlier start time), we will be treated to a Hadassah-led Shabbat service. Our darshanit will be Regional President (and past CBS President) Rhoda Dombchick. Hadassah International, founded by Henrietta Szold, turned 100 on March 3rd. As the largest women’s and the largest Zionist organization, Hadassah has been instrumental in raising the level of health care for both Jews and Arabs in the Middle East, and has perhaps done more than any other organization in modeling peace for both peoples in that region through their approach to providing medical support to everyone in need.

*Saturday, February 16, 9:30 a.m. Shabbat services. My sermon topic will be:

Parshat Teruma: Giving the Gift vs. BEING the Gift

*Sunday, February 17, 7 p.m., Kraft Lecture Series featuring Rabbi Charles Simon and a forward-looking and synagogue-building approach to intermarriage.

Hug a Hadassah lady! BE a gift! Help make our shul a welcoming home for Intermarried families! Attend Shabbat services and our Kraft Lecture series at Beth Shalom!!

B’yedidut,

Rabbi Michael

PJ Library - Bat Mitzvah - Torah Plus: Busy CBS Shabbat

Dear Haverim:

*This Friday night, February 8, at a special 8 p.m. time, we will celebrate the bat mitzvah of Lea Harlev. As part of the celebration, Lea’s grandfather, Cantor Joseph Levine will be our guest darshan. His topic: A Half Shekel’s Worth of Torah. This is a nod to Shabbat Shekalim, the first of the four special Shabbatot before Passover.

*This Saturday, February 9, 9:30 a.m., the Harlev bat mitzvah celebration continues in our Main Sanctuary, and Lea Harlev will be our guest darshanit. I am not allowed to tell you the topic because she wrote the sermon herself, and wants it to be a surprise to her parents … so you will just have to come and hear for yourself.

*Also this Saturday, February 9, 9:30 – 10:45 a.m., is PJ Shabbat, for the zero to five crowd, and their parents, in our Lower Level. Cakes and Miracles: a Purim Tale will be the featured story, in anticipation of the upcoming Purim holiday.

*Also this Saturday, February 8, 9:30 a.m. - ?, is our first Torah Plus Service in the Chapel. For those seeking a lay-led service with a complete Pesukei d’Zimra, repetition of both Amidahs, a full keriah of the Torah reading, and adult Torah study – this service is for you.

Come to Beth Shalom for Shabbat and choose the service which best meets your specific needs – because at CBS we’ve got it ALL!

Shabbat shalom,

Rabbi Michael

Shabbat guided meditation

Dear Haverim:

This past Shabbat, some of you commented that you wanted a copy of the brief Shabbat visualization meditation I led you through.  So here it is.  I began by having each of you close your eyes and focus on your breathing.  If you knew Hebrew, I asked you to imagine the three letters of the word, Shabbat, shin, bet and tav.  I asked you to inhale deeply on SHA and exhale on BAT.  When you had stilled yourselves, focusing on your breathing, I read the following in a quiet, comforting voice:

The Good Ship Shabbat

By Rabbi Brad Artson

Every Jew is invited to a weekly cruise. All embark on a Friday night. Once on ship, there is no need to work -- since all the preparations are already complete. Instead, the voyagers can finally focus on refreshing their tired spirits, their strained hearts and their distracted minds.

An opening service involves thanking the Captain and crew, through poetry, song and discussion, for preparing such a restful and pleasant voyage. A lavish dinner follows -- complete with beautiful candlelight, sparkling wine and a bread so rich it tastes like cake. People retire early for private time and for restful slumber. The next morning, the voyagers gather for a light breakfast, and then spend the morning together, reading and thinking about their goals in life, where they've come so far, what their history has taught them, and what kind of people they want to be.

At noon, another festive meal, no less wonderful than last night's dinner, is served. In the afternoon, some walk the deck, some play ball, some read, while others sleep. At the end of the day, as the cruise returns to shore, all gather for a candle-lighting ceremony and farewell. Renewed and energized, the participants are able to face the new week with anticipation and zeal.

Such a cruise is available to you each week, and has been departing every Friday night for more than 3,000 years. The good ship Shabbat is as seaworthy as ever; all it needs is passengers -- no advance reservations required. All aboard!

Ed Koch, z"l

Dear Haverim:

This past Shabbat I shared some material which you expressed interest in having. So here is the first installment.

In marking the death of former 3-term NYC Mayor Ed Koch, 88, I shared that on his Manhattan gravestone he arranged for the following two quotes:

Here O Israel the Lord is our God the Lord is One

Shema Yisrael Adonai Eloheynu Adonai Echad.

and

My father is a Jew. My mother is a Jew. I am a Jew.

--Last words spoken by Wall Street Journal reporter Danny Pearl

I shared my own two favorite Koch sayings:

a. How am I doin’?

and

b. I can explain it to you, but I can’t comprehend it for you.

In addition, I shared reporter Matthew Goldberg’s top-ten Koch quotes:

10. The best way to lose weight is to close your mouth— something very difficult for a politician. Or watch your food—just watch it, don’t eat it.

10 (tie). When all are wrong, everyone is right.

9. (At a commencement address)

The fireworks begin today. Each diploma is a lighted match. Each one of you is a fuse.

8. If I traveled to the end of the rainbow as Dame Fortune did intend, Murphy would be there to tell me the pot’s at the other end.

7. You punch me, I punch back. I do not believe it’s good for ones self-respect to be a punching bag.

6. (After the New York Giants, who play in New Jersey, won Super Bowl XXI and asked for a permit to hold a parade in the city)

If they want a parade, let them parade in front of the oil drums in Moonachie.

5. I was born at the age of twelve on a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer lot.

4. I know many writers who first dictate passages, then polish what they have dictated. I speak, then I polish—occasionally I do windows.

3. Deals are my art form. Other people paint beautifully on canvas or write wonderful poetry. I like making deals, preferably big deals. That’s how I get my kicks.

2. In action be primitive; in foresight, a strategist.

1. If you don’t like the President, it costs you 90 bucks to fly to Washington to picket. If you don’t like the Governor, it costs you 60 bucks to fly to Albany to picket. If you don’t like me, 90 cents

May the memory of Ed Koch, staunch supporter of Israel, and very proud Jew, be for a blessing.

Zichrona l’vrahca.
